Celts ( Celtes in french ) came in Burgundy between 1800 and 1200 before J.C from central Europe. And that is when the first celts tribes formed, and the most powerful ones are :

- The « Mandubiens » are the tribe who live in Auxois, in the north of Burgundy. They're inhabitants ofAlesia, a famous place in Burgundy because of the great battle against Julius Caesar to resist the Roman conquest in -52.
- The « Eduens » owned the actual Franche-Comté, the south part of Burgundy andtheir capital was Bibracte. They were the stronger tribe in the surroundings. At the moment of Roman conquest, they ally with Roman Republic to obtain economics benefits because they werebusiness-minded and to guard themselves of « Sequanes ».

Today, we can see ruins of the celtic cities, villages :
In Alesia, nowadays call Alise Sainte-Reine, where we can see the remains of the oppidum of Alesia where a big fight took place. This battle implied Vercingetorix with 80 000 Celts soldiers of several tribes and Julius Caesar with 10 legions (more than 60 000 legionaries). To help them, some other tribes came after a few month with more than 200 000 armed civilians. After weeks of deadly fights, to save the survivors, Vercingetorix surrended to Julius Caesar and was sent in Roma to prove Julius victory.
